Dr. Suskind will share her research on the critical importance of early language exposure for a child’s development on November 12, 7:30-9:00 PM, at Holmes Elementary School (508 N Kenilworth Ave, Oak Park).
Dr. Suskind is the director of the Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program at University of Chicago Medicine and the founder and director of the Thirty Million Words Initiative.
Her recent book is based on scientific research showing the critical importance of early language exposure on the developing child. Additionally, it provides tools for parents to enhance their home language environment in order to optimize their child’s brain development, and therefore, his or her ability to learn. It was inspired by the parents and children who have been a part of the Thirty Million Words Initiative, as well as by her esteemed colleagues.
She offers a “valuable ‘call to words’ for parents, educators and anyone invested in the success and well-being of children.”
Dana and her team have one ultimate goal: to help all children reach their full potential and to close the ever-widening achievement gap by closing the word gap. She believes the book’s message is a foundation for all parents of young children in understanding the power of words and building their child’s brain. Further, she hopes it will help change the lifetime trajectory of the millions of our children who are predicted to fail and whose potentials we will never know.
